Cold Weather Car Care Tips

on 01/06/2014

With the unbearable winter cold it's important to know how to properly keep your car going through these frigid winter months. Here are a few tips to help keep your car running strong even in the below zero cold!

1. Keep your gas tank full! Varying temperatures can cause condensation to form inside your gas tank. When the temperatures drop below freezing this can sometimes cause freezing leading to a car that won't start. Keeping your tank full helps reduce the amount of condensation that can form on the walls of your gas tank.

2. Check your anti-freeze (coolant)! Using a 50/50 ratio of half water, half anti-freeze is the norm for most cars.  Anti-freeze helps reduce corrosion and protects the engine from freezing.

3. Check your battery! On average, batteries aged 3-5 years fail in the cold winter climates (Dmitry Zelenskiy, of AAA). Keeping your vehicle in a garage is one way to help insure your vehicle will start, but you can also remove the battery and bring it in the house!

4. Block heaters can help! These small electrical devices plug in to help keep your engine, battery, and oil warm. Prices vary on these devices from super affordable to the more expensive side depending.

5. Inflate your tires, properly! The correct tire pressure can help your cars handling in the snow and ice. When the weather drops or raises this can cause air to leak out of the rim on some tires and wheels. Making a habit of checking your pressures when you fill up your gas tank is a good practice!

6. Windshield washer fluid can help! Spending a little more on the "winter blend" washer fluid during the cold winter months can help reduce the chance of the fluid freezing on your windshield.

7. Be ready for an emergency! It is always important to have an emergency driving kit, but it becomes a necessity in the winter. Good things to have in your winter emergency kit are; a blanket, extra gloves, hats, etc., flashlight, snacks, water, jumper cables, and kitty litter.  The list can go on. It is important that whatever you put into your emergency kit you will keep you safe in the event you need to use the kit.
